About William MacGillivary : Ornithologist. Born in Old Aberdeen he was educated at King’s and Marischal Colleges and appointed Regius Professor of Natural History at Aberdeen in 1841. His five volume History of British Birds, along with his work with American bird artist James John Audubon laid the foundations of modern ornithology. His observations about birdlife were also used by Charles Darwin for his work on The Descent of Man.
